What is the Best Protein Supplement for Muscle Building?

By Vince Delmonte

The best protein supplements is one that not only taste great, but is also efficient at helping your body build muscle. With so many different types of protein supplements on the market, determining which is the best protein supplement can be a difficult task.  Furthermore, the fact that not all protein supplements are created equally complicates the matter further.

The first step to choosing the best protein supplement involves becoming familiar with some of the key ingredients that are found in protein supplements.

Those ingredients are:

  • Whey protein isolate

  • Whey protein concentrate

  • Hydrolyzed whey

  • Calcium caseinate

  • Egg white

  • Whole egg

  • Micellar casein

How are each of these important or beneficial for you and your body when it comes to building muscle?

Whey Protein- This protein makes up approximately 20% of the total protein found in milk. Its benefits are derived primarily from its amino acid composition.

Casein Protein- This protein comprises the other 80% of milk proteins. It also is powerful based upon its amino acid composition, but it also has a unique variety of peptides in its composition.

Soy Protein- This form of protein is thought in both positive and negative terms as while soy in itself is very powerful as a superfood, there is actually just as much research pointing at its harmful properties.

Whey Hydrolysates- These are among the most quickly absorbed proteins, very important for bodybuilding.

Evaluating the Differences Between Whey Protein and Whey Isolate

You will often find both forms in supplements you purchase at your local health foods stores. Whey protein is often more expensive than the concentrate and they contain more protein and less fat than the concentrates. Whey protein is also actually easier to absorb into the body.

How can Each Protein Type be Beneficial to the Body?

Whey Proteins- These are quickly absorbed, making them beneficial immediately prior to a workout.

Casein Protein- This type of protein is digested slower, so it is best to consume following a workout routine.

Whey Hydrolysates- These proteins are great during any phase of your workout- before, during and after.

Each of these protein forms are great in natural foods added to the diet, and they are also beneficial when added in the forms of protein powders, supplements or meal replacements.

Conclusion

There is no "best protein supplement", since most forms of protein supplements can be beneficial for different applications.  As a general rule of thumb, follow these guidelines:

  • Use whey protein for post workout meals, and casein protein at night.

  • Avoid soy protein supplements

  • If cost is an issue, go with a high quality whey protein concentrate supplement like 100% Whey Gold Standard.  This will give you the most bang for your buck, and is a good "universal" protein supplement.

Finally, although protein supplements are an important part of your muscle building diet, try to derive the majority of the protein in your diet from whole foods like lean meats, fish, poultry and eggs.
