Pre Workout Nutrition
Proper planning for your workouts will enable you to get the best possible results from each one. When you prepare to walk into the gym for your routine, you want to be both mentally prepared and physically prepared.
One of the most important things that you can do before you workout is eat properly. Your goals for a pre-workout meal are to maximize your potential strength, to provide the body with the needed energy to become successful and to minimize the breakdown of your muscles.
In addition to concerning yourself with food, you will need to make sure that you are fully hydrated. Water is important for every bodily function, yet so many of us do not drink enough on a daily basis. It is not advised to drink a ton of water right before you workout, but rather to prepare a few hours ahead of time with your hydration.
Your pre-workout meal should be consumed about 30-45 minutes before you head off to workout so that you don’t cramp and are not feeling too full.
It is advised that you consume about 30-40 grams of protein prior to your workout. Among the protein that you consume, it is advised that you select a whey protein as it can help your muscles to prevent catabolism during your workout. Many people will mix their whey protein with milk to enable the body to absorb it better. A common way to get this mix is through a shake.
In addition to the protein, you should also consume some carbohydrates. Choose low glycemic carbohydrates as they will be absorbed gradually into the blood stream and will help the body to have its needed energy during the workout.
Along with your protein shake you should also consume 1-2 portions of low-glycemic carbohydrates. Low glycemic carbohydrates are ideal before the workout because they are broken down and absorbed gradually in the bloodstream, providing your body with a steady stream of energy throughout your workout. Consider adding things like oatmeal or brown rice before your workout.
You may also want to consider a cup of coffee or an energy drink before you workout to give you that added boost of energy.
