Use a closed hand grip - A closed hand grip means that your thumb wraps around the barbell. Using an open hand grip on any heavy pressing movements (chest press, shoulder press) is a recipe for disaster.
Make sure you spotter knows what he is doing! - Having a spotter is pointless if he is not paying attention. His job is to catch the bar before it crushes your rib cage!
Communicate with your spotter - Make sure you spotter knows when to step in. If you feel like you can't make the lift, make sure he knows.
