What are Antioxdants?

Antioxidants are  substances that are found in fruits and vegetables, and are also produced by the body.   They are very beneficial to our long term health, and play a number of important roles.  Their main role is to combat potentially damaging molecules (free radicals) in our bodies.

Antioxidants actually bind together with free radicals, decreasing their destructive powers and neutralizing them.  Without antioxidants, free radicals could play havoc on our bodies.

The most well know antioxidants are vitamin C, vitamin E, beta-carotene, Manganese, selenium, zinc and the bioflavonoids.  Although most of these vitamins and minerals are found in foods, it can be difficult to obtain the amounts required by the body to fight free radical damage caused by intense training.

More on free radicals

Free radicals are destructive molecules that form in the body.  These aggressive, unstable chemicals  damage any cells that they come in to contact with, and are responsible for tissue damage, aging, and disease.

Some of the most common causes of free radical formation include:

  • Environmental pollutants
  • Cigarette smoking
  • Household chemicals
  • All forms of intense exercise

Since exercise such as weight lifting is responsible for the formation of free radicals, bodybuilders need to make sure that they are doing all they can to prevent free radical damage.

In the end, no matter how careful we are, there will always  be free radicals forming in our bodies.  The good news is that antioxidants combat the free radicals before they have a chance to do any damage.

What is the Role of Antioxidant Supplements?

Antioxidants work both directly and indirectly against free radicals.  Their  main role is to act as "scavengers" and attach themselves to free radical molecules.  Once they are attached to the free radicals, they no longer pose a threat to healthy cells.  They are also responsible for inhibiting the formation of free radicals, as well as preventing the depletion of other antioxidants.

Antioxidants work synergistically, meaning that they work best when taken together, and not individually.  For example, taking vitamins A, C, E and selenium together has been proven to be a very powerful antioxidant combination.  If only one of the above mentioned antioxidants is taken alone, it's antioxidant properties are much weaker.

Conclusion

Antioxidant supplements are not as important as multi-vitamins, but warrant consideration.  With highly intense weight training workouts and large amounts of food being consumed, substantial free radical formation is likely.  Fortunately the negative effects associated with free radicals can be offset by consuming the right amounts of antioxidants.

Although  colorful  fruits and vegetables are an excellent source of antioxidants, and should be a part of your muscle building diet, it can be difficult to consume the right amount every day to ensure that you are getting all of the antioxidants that your body needs.  This is where antioxidant supplements can be helpful, and should be considered an essential part of your supplementation program.
