6 Essential Mass Building Tips for Hardgainers

By:  Trevor ReedTrevor Reed Muscle

Here is a short article that Trevor Reed was kind enough to put together for the site.  If you aren't familiar with Trevor Reed's accomplishments, check out the interview and his pictures on Trevor Reed's muscle transformation page.  This former long distance runner was able to make some very impressive muscle gains in a relatively short period of time.

Below, Trevor (a self proclaimed hardgainer) shares some of what he believes to be the most important aspects of his muscle building routine.  These are just some of the steps he took to achieve his goals, and  are steps that you should also be taking if you are serious about building mass.

These are six important key factors that Trevor followed to pack on over 40 pounds of mass:

#1 - Set Goals

Set your goals high, but take them step by step. One thing that really helped me was to write down my goals and hang them up in my room and around my house. Even look into getting a trainer who knows about bodybuilding and serious muscle building. As much as you think you know about what you are doing, someone can always help.

#2 - Eat

You cant get big unless you eat. I made my most significant gains once i finally got my weight gain diet on target. You need to eat according to the clock and not according to your stomach. Your two most important meals are breakfast and your post workout shake.

Dont miss meals!

If you miss meals you will never make the gains you are looking for. Alot of guys are afraid of putting on too much fat. Dont worry about that, if you put on a few unwanted pounds it will still allow you to build more muscle. You can always change up your diet to clean and tighten up a little bit.

#3 - Be Consistant
  • Sleep -  Consistant sleep in important. Late nights and early mornings do not mix well with getting big. It depends on your goals but find a balance between living life and getting the same sleep each night.

  • Workouts - I have unintentionally missed no more than 5 days in the gym in one and a half years.  Do not miss workouts, from here on out! Iit is not an option to miss workouts it is part of your every day routine.

  • Meals - Never miss meals. Buy tupperware and cook your meals the night before so that no matter where you go you can always take your meals with you.
#4 - Superset Biceps & Triceps

My arms exploded when i discovered supersets. I would do dumbbell curls for 10 reps and without rest do dumbbell kickbacks for 10 reps. Skull crushers and EZ bar curls, pushdowns cable curls.... You can do this with almost every bi and tri excersise. when i started doing this nothing made my arms grew way more.

#5 -  Flex and Pose Between Sets

This really helps bring out shape and size. people will look at you funny but that is why they will stay small and you are getting big. You will notice subtle changes when you start doing this.

#6 -  Eat in the middle of the night

Being a hardgainer, my metabolism is very fast and i really hold onto my weight and gain much more when i have a shake in the middle of the night. This also helps you become more determined and keeps your mind on target towards your goals.

These are just some of the things that will get you set on your way to achieving your goals. Work hard and be consistant you will see how sculpting your body will become addictive.  Bring intensity to each and every workout and always visualize your goals, and success will follow.

Tip Of The Month

I assume that your main goal is to learn how to build muscle fast and not how to get skinny fast, but many of you are actually encouraging weight loss as opposed to weight gain.  Too much weight training and not enough food will literally make it impossible to gain weight, and it's safe to say that if you are losing weight or seeing no results at all, it's time to step back and make some major changes.  Start to eat more food and train less, and I can almost guarantee that you will start seeing some great results.
